NIRF Ranking 2024 announced: From top institutes to universities to colleges; check complete list here

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the much-awaited 9th edition of National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2024 on Monday (August 12, 2024). The NIRF Rankings, released annually, assess and rank higher education institutions in India based on various criteria.

IIT Madras was ranked the best higher educational institution across the nation, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru came second, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay secured third place followed by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in an overall category ranking conducted by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

As usual, IITs have maintained their stronghold in the engineering category of the NIRF Rankings 2024, occupying most of the top 10 positions.

Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked the best university in the country followed by JNU Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University’s Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen’s College.

The Chennai-based institute retained the No 1 position in categories “overall and engineering.”

The NIRF introduced three new categories this year: Open Universities, Skill Universities and State-funded universities. The NIRF is also planning to introduce sustainability as a new category in 2025.

After announcing the NIRF Ranking 2024, the Union Education Minister said, “I want to appeal through this programme that every Indian higher education institution should come at ranking. This will help the students and their parents better understand the institution. This will also promote quality education.”

“The participation of educational institutions of the country in NIRF is gradually increasing… I would like to appeal through today’s program that gradually all the higher education institutions of India should come in it. Due to this, the students and parents of the country will be able to know in which type of institutions their children are studying and the children themselves will also be able to know in which type of institution they are studying. This competition will increase the quality of education in the country…A lot of reform has been done in the existing accreditation process. It has been made very transparent…” the Education Minister added.

The 13-category rankings were unveiled at an event in Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Minister of State for Education Sukanto Majumdar also attended the event.
