Born on September 26, 1932, in a village in Punjab, Dr. Singh excelled academically from an early age. He completed his Matriculation from Punjab University in 1948 and later pursued higher education in the United Kingdom. He earned a First Class Honours degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge in 1957, followed by a D.Phil. in Economics from Nuffield College, Oxford, in 1962.
Dr. Singh’s career began in academia, teaching at Punjab University and the Delhi School of Economics.
In 1971, Dr. Singh joined the Government of India as Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Commerce. He subsequently became Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance in 1972. His distinguished career also included serving as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
Dr. Singh’s tenure as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 was transformative for the Indian economy. He spearheaded a comprehensive policy of economic reforms, earning global recognition for his visionary leadership.
In 2004, the Indian National Congress won the parliamentary elections, and Dr. Singh assumed the role of Prime Minister. He took the oath for a second term on May 22, 2009. Over his political career, Dr. Singh served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha (India’s Upper House of Parliament) from 1991, where he was Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004.
