On Monday, the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education issued an order to ensure strict adherence to admission procedures and to verify students’ documents to prevent the enrollment of illegal Bangladeshi migrants. According to the circular, schools must ensure that a thorough and careful process is followed when admitting migrant children, requiring the submission, verification, and proper handling of all necessary documents.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi posted the notice on her official X (formally Twitter) handle. She tweeted, ‘On one side the BJP people who bring Rohingyas to Delhi by making them cross the border from Bangladesh and give them EWS flats and facilities meant for Delhiites. On the other hand, there is the Aam Aadmi Party government of Delhi which is taking every possible step to ensure that the Rohingyas do not get the rights of Delhiites. Today, the Education Department of the Delhi Government has passed a strict order that no Rohingya should be given admission in the government schools of Delhi.”
The official notice reads, ‘Schools must ensure strict admission procedures, verification of students’ documentation to prevent illegal Bangladeshi migrants enrollment, implementation of greater scrutiny to detect and prevent unauthorised admission of illegal Bangladeshi migrants in particular.’
The notice further reads, ‘As the Heads of Govt., Govt. Aided and Unaided Recognised Private Schools of DoE are further directed that in case of any doubt, the matter must be referred to local police and revenue authority.’
Further, the Deputy Directors of Education (district and zonal) have been instructed to submit a weekly report on all cases where a student’s citizenship status remains unverified.
This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to promote transparency in the school admission process, with a focus on ensuring that only eligible students are enrolled.
